Moodle Version 3.x - How to Import Labster simulations into your course

Action Needed: If you are currently adding Labster simulations directly to Moodle, please note that we are upgrading your experience. To benefit from this upgrade, your LMS admin needs to install a new tool, please reach out to them to have them complete this step with your Labster representative.


  • Labster LTI tool must have been enabled and configured by the Moodle administrator at your institution according to instructions here.

  • You must have teacher or administrator credentials to be able to edit the course.

  • You must have received a 6-digit license code created specifically for your course along with the simulation URLs from Labster customer success team.

  • You must have downloaded your Labster simulations in a common cartridge .zip file from the Faculty Resources page. Instructions for download are in the video below:

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Log in to Moodle as an Administrator or Teacher

  2. Go to Courses and select a previously created course

  3. On the Administration panel on the left side of the screen, scroll down and select Restore

  4. Under Import a backup file, click on Choose a File and browse your computer for the .zip file of your Labster Common Cartridge

  • Attachment: Choose File

  • Save as: Labster

  • Author:

  • Choose License: All rights reserved

  • Click Upload this File

  • Click on the .zip file

5. Click the Restore button

6. On the Backup details screen, press the Continue button

7. On the 2.Destination step, choose one of the following options:

> To input the file to a new course, click on Restore as a new course:

  • Select Restore as a new course

  • Select the intended category

  • Select the Continue button

> To add more simulations to the selected course, click on Restore into this course:

  • Select Merge the backup course into this course

  • Select the Continue button

> To add more simulations to another existing course, click on Restore into an existing course:

  • Select Merge the backup course into the existing course

  • Select or Search the intended Course on the Select a course option

  • Select the Continue button

8. On 3. Settings > Restore settings section, select the following checkboxes:

  • Include enrollment methods: do not check

  • Include activities and resources: check

  • Include blocks: check

  • Include groups and groupings: check

9. Click the Next button

10. Under Course settings: You make the choice

Note: In this section, you can choose whether to overwrite the existing data of the course (course name, start date, selected simulations). The course will be created as per your input data.

11. Under Restore settings, scroll down and click Perform Restore

12. Under the Complete section, click the Continue button

Congratulations! Now you have completed the common cartridge import. Please proceed to the next section to finish setting up your course.

Add License Code**

**Please note that you may omit this step if your institution's Labster setup does not require it. If you are prompted to enter your license code, please follow these steps.

  1. From Instructor access, click one of the simulations and press Launch after you have completed adding the simulation URLs. You must launch one of the simulations in the course in order to connect the course with the correct license. Please note that only an Instructor role can proceed with this step. If you are logged in as an Admin, please use the 'Quick Enroll' function.

  2. A box will appear prompting you to enter your license code, enter it and press Apply.*

  3. You will receive a confirmation screen that your course is now fully set up and ready for the students.
