How to add Labster simulation to your course directly from your School Learning System

Updated over 5 months ago

In this article, we will cover how to add Labster simulations to your courses. Since your institution has chosen to integrate Labster with your LMS, we'll walk you through the steps to ensure accessing Labster is simple and easy to follow for everyone.

Important note

  • Before you can add Labster simulations to your course, the LMS Administrator of your Institution needs to set up Labster tool. This technical step can only be perform by the IT team.

  • You'll need to be logged in to the LMS with either teacher or administrator access to make changes to your course and add Labster Simulation.

  • You need both Lasbter set-up as a tool in your LMS and an active license to access Labster

  • If Labster isn't set up yet, please reach out to your Labster Customer Success Manager or our Support Team for help

Labster is excited to announce updates to our catalog that make discovering and assigning relevant content easier than ever:

Step-by-step & detailed instructions

๐Ÿ’ป Access Labster's catalog from Schoology

  1. Log in to your Schoology account as an instructor.

  2. Go to the course you would like to add content to.

  3. Click Materials โ†’ Add Materials โ†’ Select the Labster app.

  4. Once you select the tool, a pop-up window will appear within your Schoology course, where you can browse our entire catalog (including all the supplementary resources).

๐Ÿ”Ž Browse into Labster catalog and select the simulation(s) you wish to add to your course

  5. Search for simulation, course, unit or collection

From the catalog page (content picker), you have two easy ways to search for simulations:

    1. Search Bar: Use the search bar at the top right to find a specific simulation, unit, or course by entering keywords.

    2. Browse: Explore available Courses or Collections to find simulations that align to your curriculum. Narrow down the selection by applying filters. Click on "Discipline" or "Education level" and select the relevant criteria..

  6. Once you found what you're looking for, you can add one or multiple simulations to you course:

    1. Click on the blue "Add simulation" button to select the simulation(s) that you want to include to your course. Repeat the process for each simulation that you would like to add.

    2. You can also add a full Course Package, Course Unit or Collection by clicking on the blue "Add Unit" or "Add Content" button.

As you select multiple contents, a black banner will appear at the bottom of the screen displaying the number of simulations you've selected. When youโ€™re done, simply click "Done" to finalize and add all selected simulations to your LMS course.

โŒPlease note that you cannot unselect simulations from a course, unit or collection. you can only add the full list.

โœ…If you want to adjust the list, you can search for the simulation one by one or delete the unwanted simulations at the end of the process (after adding them to your course, instead of editing the settings & publishing you can delete them from your course).

โš™๏ธ Edit the settings of the simulations

7. Once you add simulation(s), find the simulation in your materials section and click on the settings cog โ†’ Edit

8. Checkmark the Enable Grading checkbox and assign points to the simulation

9. Click Save changes

๐ŸŽ‰The simulations are now published in your course according to the settings you have selected.

Thatโ€™s it the simulations are published! Reproduce all the steps above for all the courses you wish to add Labster Simulation.

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŽ“ Student access, grades & progress

  • Access Labster

To access Labster's simulation, your students will need to login into their student account/LMS portal and go to the course you have published in Labster's simulations. They don't need an account with Labster since the simulations are accessible within your school LMS.

They will simply click on the simulation name and they can start to learn!

  • Monitor their grade, score and progress

Once they have played or started a simulation, you can follow their score and progress from 2 different tools:

  • Labster dashboard

  • Your LMS Gradebook (final grade only)

Labster Dashboard

You can add the Labster Dashboard as a new activity or resource following the same guidelines from above.

โ—Schoology Detailed Assignment Settings

When you add an assignment, you will be able to edit the settings for the assignment by clicking on the assignment settings and on the Edit option:

There are multiple settings that you can change, based on your preferences and requirements. This section will go through the assignment settings.

  • Tool Provider: This is the tool you select when adding simulations. In most cases, it should be either "Labster" or "Labster LTI 1.3".

  • Title: This is the title of the assignment, which should be pre-filled with the name of the simulation you are adding.

  • URL: This is the link to the simulation which is pre-filled when the simulation is selected. This should not be changed as the simulation will not work/load properly if the link is changed.

  • Custom Parameters: This setting will allow you to add custom parameters to the assignment. For more information, you can refer to this guide from Schoology.

  • The Enable Editing checkmark unlocks further settings for the assignments:

  • Collected Type: Selecting Collected will disable the ability to add a traditional score to the assignment. Collected Type assignments will passback to PowerTeacher Pro gradebook with the score type of Collected Only. Other SIS integrations will present these assignments as any other assignment with a grade column.

  • Category: This allows you to assign an assignment to a specific, custom category. For example, you can create a category called "Labster" or "Simulations".

  • Scale: This allows you to change how grades are displayed.

    1. Numeric โ€” displays the final grade as a percentage.

    2. A+/- โ€” displays the final grade as a letter (A, B, C, D, F, +/-).

    3. You can also select a custom grading Scale in this area.

  • Period: This setting allows you to assign a grading period to the assignment if required.

  • Availability & Due Dates: These settings allow you to assign a due date and select the dates when the assignments will be available to students.

  • Learning Objectives: This Schoology setting allows you to align the assignment to a specific learning objective if required.

  • Options:

  1. Individually Assign: This option allows assigning the simulation to individual students if required.

  2. Count in Grade Enabled/Disabled: Use Count in Grade Enabled to mark a material that should be included in final grade calculations. Assessments with Count in Grade disabled, that are synced to PowerSchool SIS, will set the Count in Grade settings within PowerTeacher Pro gradebook to be disabled as well.
