How is Student Usage Calculated?

Monitor how many students have been using Labster

Updated over a month ago

Student licenses are used for Institutional Pay agreements (where the institution pays for using Labster). For Bookstore Pay and Student Pay contracts, students purchase access themselves, so institutional student-license counting doesn’t apply in the same way.

Labster pricing is based on the number of users, and user totals are counted by year. The way we define and count “users” depends on your pricing plan.

New pricing plans: unique users

For Labster Explorer, Labster Advanced, and Labster Elite, licensing is based on unique users:

  • Each unique student who attempts to play a Labster simulation is counted as one license.

  • A student is only counted once per year, even if they play multiple simulations.

Older pricing options

Some contracts follow older counting methods, depending on segment and contract terms.

Higher Education: course enrollments (“per student per course”)

For Higher Education contracts using course-enrollment pricing, licenses are based on course enrollments, not unique individuals.

Example:

  • 100 students take GenChem I and Organic Chemistry in the fall → 200 course enrollments

  • If the same 100 students take GenChem II and Biochem in the spring → another 200 course enrollments

  • Total for the year → 400 course enrollments

High School: seats (“per seat”)

For High School contracts using seat-based pricing, licenses are based on the number of students using Labster at a given time (often a semester), also called “seats.”

Example:

  • 200 students use Labster in the fall, and a different 200 students use Labster in the spring
→ this may be counted as 200 seats total (not 400), because each seat is counted once.

This means you can have a different number of “seats” than the total number of individual students who use Labster over the year.

When a student license is counted

A student license is counted only when a student attempts to play a simulation.

  • ✅ License counted: student starts/attempts a simulation

  • ❌ License not counted: student logs in but does not attempt a simulation
