How to Whitelist/Approve Labster's App for Installation on Chromebook Devices

Instructions for whitelisting Labster's Chromebook app

Updated over 2 weeks ago

If students are unable to install the Labster app on their school-managed Chromebooks, the device administrator will need to whitelist the app through the Google Admin Console. This guide is intended for IT administrators managing Chromebook fleets in educational institutions.

Prerequisites

  • Admin access to Google Admin Console

  • Administrative privileges for the organizational unit containing the Chromebooks

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Access Google Admin Console

  1. Navigate to admin.google.com

  2. Sign in with your administrator account

  3. Go to Devices > Chrome > Apps & Extensions

2. Add Labster App to Allowlist

  1. Click the Add button (+ icon)

  2. Search for "Labster" in the Chrome Web Store search field

  3. Select the official Labster app from the results

  4. Click Select

3. Configure App Settings

  1. In the app configuration panel:

    • Set Installation to "Force install" or "Allow install"

    • Choose the appropriate organizational unit (OU) or apply to all devices

    • Set Pin to taskbar (optional, but recommended for easy student access)

  2. Under User Experience:

    • Enable "Allow app to run in background" if needed

    • Configure any additional permissions as required

4. Apply Changes

  1. Click Save to apply the policy

  2. The changes may take up to 24 hours to propagate to all devices

  3. Students may need to restart their Chromebooks or sign out and back in

To confirm the app is properly whitelisted:

  1. Check the Apps & Extensions list in Admin Console

  2. Verify the Labster app appears with the correct organizational unit

  3. Test installation on a sample Chromebook device

Common Troubleshooting

App still won't install after 24 hours:

  • Verify the correct organizational unit is selected

  • Check that Chrome Education/Enterprise licenses are active

  • Ensure Chromebooks are properly enrolled in your domain

Students see "App blocked" message:

  • Confirm the app is set to "Allow install" or "Force install"

  • Check if there are conflicting policies blocking app installations

Additional Notes

  • Changes to Chrome policies can take up to 24 hours to sync

  • Students will need to access the Chrome Web Store or have the app auto-installed (if set to "Force install")

  • For bulk deployment, consider using "Force install" to automatically push the app to all managed devices
