If you are playing one of our Practice Activities such as Balancing Equations: Mastering the process or any Fundamental Mathematics, then please check our dedicated article.
You might need a break while playing a simulation or may want to start fresh with a new attempt. Resuming allows you to pause the simulation and pick up where you left off in the same attempt, while "Start a New Attempt" lets you begin the simulation from scratch. This guide will show you how to make the most of these features.
⏯️Resuming an attempt
The simulation can be paused at any time if you need to step away and resume at a later time where you left off. However, if the simulation remains paused for an extended period, the session may expire, and resuming will restart from the last unlocked checkpoint.
Note that not all simulations offer the option to resume, particularly if significant progress was made or if system constraints require restarting.
To do so, click on "esc" on your keyboard, and when you need to access the simulation again, hit "Resume".
When you resume, you
✅keep the same attempt
✅start from the beginning of the mission where you left off
❌skipping part of the mission is never available
✔️Saving points and mission
Our simulations contain automatic saving points so that you can pause a simulation and resume your attempt later on. The saving points match the completion of tasks or 'missions', so that resuming your attempt always leads you to the beginning of a task, which might be a few steps back from where you left the lab.
You will be notified by a 'Saving progress' notification at the top right of your screen when your progress is being saved.
To reload and replay a mission from the beginning, raise your LabPad and access the "mission" tab to click "load checkpoint".
🔁Start a new attempt
Selecting 'Start New' is suitable when you wish to reset all progress and approach the simulation from the beginning.
If you quit a simulation before it is finished, you will have the choice to "Start new" or "Resume".
If you want a fresh start, you can select "start new".
When you select start new:
✅ a new attempt will be recorded
❌you won't have the option of returning to the prior attempt.
✅you will play the simulation from the beginning
❌ skipping part of the mission is never available
Understanding the 'Play' Button
When you see the 'Play' button, it typically indicates that a new attempt will start. For example:
Your previous progress is already recorded and cannot be continued.
By pressing 'Play,' you are effectively starting over with a new attempt.
This distinction is important to understand when deciding how to proceed after quitting a simulation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Additional Notes on Simulation Management
Be mindful of your progress before quitting a simulation. Once a new attempt starts, prior progress cannot be recovered.
When you resume, you will start at the beginning of the ongoing mission which might be a few steps earlier
By understanding these features, you can make informed choices when navigating Labster simulations.
Q: Can I return to my exact spot in the simulation after exiting without reaching a checkpoint? A: No, progress is saved only at checkpoints. Exiting without reaching a checkpoint will result in resuming from the nearest previously saved point.
