In this article, we will guide you through the process of configuring the Labster LTI 1.3 tool specifically for Canvas. As an administrator, you play a crucial role in ensuring a smooth integration of the Labster tool into your learning management system. We will provide you with step-by-step instructions, tips, and best practices to successfully set up and optimize the Labster LTI 1.3 tool within your Canvas environment.

Prerequisites

  • You must have Administrator credentials for the Canvas installation to be able to set up the LTI 1.3 tool.

  • You must have received a custom tool URL from your Labster Customer Success Manager. This is the URL that you will need to apply on step 4 of the registration process.

Step-by-step instructions

Configuring the Labster LTI key

  1. Log into Canvas as an Administrator

  2. Go to the Admin menu and press Developer keys on the left-hand side panel

  3. Click the + Developer Key button

  4. Select + LTI Key

    1. Method: Enter URL

    2. JSON URL: Enter the provided custom tool URL

    3. Key name: Labster

    4. Click Save.

  5. Switch State to ON

  6. Under Details column, highlight and copy the 14-digit numerical sequence - You will need it at step 10 of the registration process

    Great, the Labster LTI key has been configured! The next step is adding a placement for the tool.

Creating a placement for the Labster tool

After installing the Labster LTI key, the next step is to set up a placement for the tool so that it can be easily accessed within courses. If you've installed the Labster LTI key at the system level, you only need to configure the placement for the instructors who will be using the Labster tool. This can be done at various levels, such as department, college, district, etc. To accomplish this, please follow these instructions:

  1. Navigate to Settings on the left-hand side panel at the desired level to add the placement.

  2. Select Apps tab

  3. Go to View App Configurations

  4. a) Click the +App button

    b) Change Configuration Type to By Client ID

    c) Paste the numerical sequence in the Client ID field

    d) Click Submit and then Install

  5. After successfully configuring a placement, kindly provide your Labster Implementation Specialist with the numerical sequence of your Client ID and your Canvas Domain. (i.e. https://instructure.labsteruniversity.com)
