Labster and 3rd Party Cookie Usage

In this article you will find out about how Labster uses 3rd party cookies.

Updated over a year ago

Can I still use Labster with with 3rd party Cookie restrictions from Google?

Yes you can! As you may know, Google this year (2024) has started to restrict use of 3rd party cookies. Currently around 1% of Google Chrome users are affected by this, and this will be ramped up to 100% throughout the year. Labster users are unaffected by this change.

What does this mean?

Cookies are essentially small data files that ‘remember’ information on users. They are used in many online developments and integrations to store and transfer data and enable certain user experiences. However, Google this year has started to deprecate the use of them in order to better protect data privacy for its users.

Am I affected by Google’s 3rd party cookie deprecation as a Labster user?

Labster has worked hard to ensure users are not affected by this change. Like almost all other tech companies, we followed the standard of using 3rd party cookies to enable some of our LMS integrations and to offer Chrome browser support (v114+). As soon as it was announced Google would be deprecating the use of 3rd party cookies, we started to work on alternative solutions.

In early 2024, we released this alternative solution. The great news is, as a user, there’s nothing for you to do - just check that you are using an up-to-date Chrome version (114 or above). Then you can continue to use Labster through Google Chrome and/or your LMS.

At Labster, we know how important it is to keep the wheels turning in education, and how disruptive a 404 error can be! We are committed to a great user experience so it was essential we delivered on a solution that would involve no break of service for you or your students.
